Welcome to the March Face Painting Competition - This competition is now closed.
For March, we invited face painters to paint their competition entries with the theme is Spring is Here! Your designs could have been inspired by any aspect of Spring including flowers and trees bursting into bloom, Easter eggs, bunnies, chicks or chocolate!
We asked our guest judge for this competiton Suzanne Mykolajenko to take a look at all the entries and pick her winners. Suzanne has many years of experience in the face and body painting industry, has travelled the world extensively teaching face and body painting and also written two face painting books, The Little Story Book of Face Painted Fairies Vol 1 & 2.
Suzanne said: "I have been asked to judge the Illusion “Spring is Here!” Face Painting Competition, what an honour! What talent you all have! And a total of 76 entries! Wow! It was indeedy a difficult but enjoyable task.
When I look at face painting designs there’s a little voice in my head saying . . .“How can I simplify this design to paint on the job with a queue? Does this design complement or use the elements of the face well?” Obviously the skill level comes in to it, it must also fit the theme, confident and well practised line work is a biggy, and “sometimes less is more”.
First Place - Gretchen Fleener
Suzanne said: "This stunning work of art is beautiful in so many ways. It fits the theme perfectly. What is Spring without bees? The placement of the design and how it frames the models eyes complements the shape of her face. The highlights and shadows really make it jump. Very cool use of stencils, the honeycomb looks so real and that drip of honey looks delicious!"
SECOND PLACE WINNER - Riina Driscoll
Suzanne said: "When I first looked at this design I had goose bumps. It is so delicately painted. The placement is perfect to me, really good use of the shape of the models face. I love how the artist has used the end of the nose for her flower petal dress. Such delicate work, particularly on her wee fairy face."
THIRD PLACE WINNER - Julia S.Merino
Suzanne said: "Wow, this design really has the “Illusion” factor! It’s very cleverly done. The 3D effect is a skill in itself, you’ve really nailed it. The shading works really well to give that depth you need for this style of painting. I love how his little chest looks puffed out because of the models nose."
Special Mentions go to the following artists:
Suzanne said: "I kept coming back to this design. I love how fresh it looks and how confidently done it is. The whimsical lines at the top give it a fun look. The bunnies are simple but delightful. I really like your colour choice and the placement is perfect. A design I can see people doing on the job."
Suzanne said: "The level of skill shown in this design is very high. Look at the shading on the bee and his chosen flower stem. His wings look fragile to me by the clever use of the white. The flowers are simple but very effective. Gorgeous work."
Suzanne said: "Sometimes a design just makes me smile! You have taken a not so easy shape and placed it beautifully on the models face. It fits the theme perfectly. I think this is very clever and certainly something we can simplify to use on a job. Thank you."
